Yes, there might be a problem with WinPcap. But there is no problem to run ethereal 0.8.16 with WinPcap 2.1 and without the Winsock 2 Update.

Therefore I supposed, that it's not just something with the WinPcap 2.1 library.

Now, when I'm writing these lines, unfortunately I've no oportunity to do some tests. I will make this up in few days and post the results here.
