I'm sorry, I think this might be a bit of a Windows question more than an Ethereal question, but the source code makes me think the developers might want some feedback here.

I see that the get_home_dir() function looks at the HOMEDRIVE and HOMEPATH variables to work out where your home directory is. When I bring up a command prompt and type "set", I see:
HOMEDRIVE=C:
HOMEPATH=\
Which isn't really a sensible default for me. Being a bit new to Windows 2000, I don't even know where to change this - this value isn't set in the System control panel under Environment Variables.

I note a comment in the function that asks whether USERPROFILE could be used, and I wish it was for me, because it's set to D:\Documents and Settings\login, which is much more useful.

Can anyone suggest whether there's something I can do to change how Windows sets HOMEDRIVE/HOMEPATH? Do they have more useful default settings on other people's machines? Could Ethereal maybe check if the HOME variable is set so those of us who also use cygwin and have that set because it's pretty important can have that same setting used in Ethereal?

Thanks,
David
