Well it turns out you're in luck!

The shiny new Qt UI (in the development branch/the 1.99.x versions) allows you
to shrink the columns just about as small as you want.  At this point the Gtk+
UI is basically in maintenance mode so I'd say we close this as "fixed with the
Qt port."

(That being said if someone feels strongly enough about this to provide a patch
against Gtk+ there's a good chance it would be accepted.  I just seriously
doubt anyone will work on it.)
