In my experience the width of the column is based on the width of the field
name.  So, if I right-click on the TCP field Destination Port and apply it as a
column then I get a column whose title is "Destination Port" and the column is
sized so that the whole title fits.  I can make it wider but not narrower (this
makes some sense since having to line-wrap the title would be a nightmare).

Is that the case for you? What's the title of the column you're trying to
shrink?  Can you provide a screen shot?

Note that if you don't like the title of the column (because it's too long) you
can always edit it after adding it (right-click on a column and select Edit
Column Details or go into the Column preferences).
