If you regularly work on the project, you get used to certain behavior, and it
looks natural to you, as opposed to somebody who only uses the program
occasionally.

Some button getting enabled is too weak clue IMO.

The better way, in case when applied and displayed are different items, is to
add the gray word "Applied" to the list item, and "Not Applied" to the item
displayed. Make those appear aligned to the right side, in gray color and
italic font.
