I'm not so fond of the use of tail in this matter. Tail, being targeted at text
files, may not push out records when you want to.

A better option would be to use a FIFO, like so:

$ mkfifo /tmp/sharkfin
$ VBoxManage modifyvm "my VM" --nictrace1 on
$ VBoxManage modifyvm "my VM" --nictracefile1 /tmp/sharkfin
$ wireshark -k -i /tmp/sharkfin
