I managed to trace the bug down to a specific checkbox option in Vern. The
problem only appear if you enable the "Set Desktop" or "Set Color" option. This
option make the desktop background change to your custom bitmap or custom color
when switching around your virtual desktops.

Exactly why this feature make GTK misbehave I have no idea.
