If that is the -i problem this should work:

$ mkfifo pcap_fifo
$ ethereal -i pcap_fifo -n -k -S -l -p &
$ ssh user@machine "/usr/local/sbin/tcpdump -i qfe1 -xX -w-"  >> pcap_fifo
