And if you try to capture, you get a reasonable error message saying WinPcap is not installed?
That's an improvement, since previously these operations caused bizarre behaviour on your system. Can you say what you did to get to this happy state, and what version of Ethereal you're now using?

I never had this sort of problem with WinPcap, so have never had to investigate it. I just did a default installation (after uninstalling any previous version) and it worked.
Try WinDump. This is always a good idea if you suspect a WinPcap problem, or need to distinguish between a WinPcap problem and an Ethereal problem. You can get WinDump from http://windump.polito.it/
If WinDump has the same problem as Ethereal, then it's a WinPcap problem. Go to http://winpcap.polito.it/contact.htm
If WinDump works but Ethereal doesn't, it's an Ethereal problem. Continue with this thread . . .
