I had
the same issue on both NT4WS & NT4S. I have W98 & Win2K
machines that seem to be working OK. Haven't heard a good answer about the cause
of this. I suspect it's DLL related though. I did fresh loads on the NT
machines(no Service Packs), & load ethereal & winpcap. It worked fine
until I rebooted, then got the same issues your reporting. The W98 PC is a
laptop and has stopped working now. However tethereal works fine, it's just hard
to see "real-time" due to the speed of the screen capture.

  Hi,

I am trying to get Ethereal 0.8.18  working on dell
  laptop running Windows 2000.

I did not have any winpcap installed on my machine.

When I run ethereal, and select Capture --> Start:

1] In the "Ethereal: Capture Preferences" dialog box, for Interface
option, I am seeing four interface entries.

2] If I select any of the first theree interfaces, and whatever
options I select I am only getting a dialog with an exclamation mark and the
  packet capturing never starts.

3] If I select the fourth interface, I get the "Ethereal: Capture"
dialog, and it appears that capture process started but I do not see any
packets of any protocal coming in it. I see all 0's for all protocols.

Can someone please help me in figuring out went wrong, and how I can get
  Ethereal to work.

  Thanks.
