Most, if not all Xircom drivers are part of the PCMCIA-Package, which is 
installed by default in most Linux-distributions.
I don't know how much you know about linux, but patching the kernel is:
a) no problem
b) seldom necessary.

Sometimes you have to compile the kernel by yourself. It depends on the 
distribution you use. I strongly recomment Debian because of the easy 
software install/upgrade mechanism with "apt". Maybe you should use RedHat 
because of the support. It depends on your Linux experience...

I can tell you more when you have the specifications from Dell.
