...which sounds as if you have two network interfaces plugged into the
two sides of the tap, which, as far as Ethereal is concerned, reduces to
two instances of Ethereal listening on what, as far as those two
instances of Ethereal are concerned, are two separate networks.

Again, try this with tcpdump; if the same problem occurs, I suspect it's
something in the OS kernel or drivers that's causing the problem.
