Incidentally, it appears that when tcpdump fails (and BTW, I get *zero*
packets from the kernel when it fails), there are about 100 dropped packets,
three overruns, and a couple of frame errors on the eth1 device.  The RX
packets no longer count up.

If I do 'ifconfig eth1 down ; ifconfig eth1 up' the RX packets start
counting up again, but I don't get errors until I actually try to capture
again.

Does tcpdump exhibit the same behavior?
