Well, we finally figured out what was going on..
Basically, my FreeBSD box didnt have an /etc/ld-elf.so.conf file
in this file, i put 
/usr/local/lib
/usr/X11R6/lib

then did the "ldconfig -elf" and/or "ldconfig" (not sure which one
acutally ended up fixing the original problem)

but anyway, i was then able to run ./configure with no problems..
