Building from the CVS tree? :-) (At home, I do Ethereal development on
FreeBSD 3.2, but I'm building from the CVS tree; I haven't tried
building from a release.)

"configure" should've left a "config.log" file in the current directory;
what does that file say after "checking for GTK - version >= 1.2.0"?
