Additional spin:
If you've ever run windows defragmenter, of old, you saw
all those detail boxes. Lots of them & color coded to sector type. I'd
like to see the packets displayed in that venue.
You mean like adding a color filter with the filter string "smtp" and blue
selected as the color, so that SMTP packets are shown in blue in the
packet list?
No. He means to get an overview of the packets at a more higher logical
level than the packet list. I was thinking of this too, but found no
time to implement something and probably won't have in the (near) future.
The idea: You'll get a window (or pane) with lot's of tiny little
colored squares (maybe a few thousand for full screen), each square
representing a single packet (colored by the color filter). So you can
get a fast overview of the packets in the capture. Additions could be
tooltips with more detailed packet information and clicking on a
specific square jumps to the packet list (like a hyper link).
It's just an idea and more effort for a good GUI design needs to be done
(apart the actual implementation effort, of course).
I don't know if this is really helpful at all, but an interesting idea
nonetheless. We might want to add it to the WishList for now.
