That was a suggestion from me, as I think it's not obvious what the
buttons mean.
The buttons serve two purposes:
1) they're labels for the text field to the right;
2) they let you pop up a dialog box to let you select saved
filters or, in the case of Ethereal filters rather than
libpcap filters, to let you select a field on which to
filter.
To which of those are you referring? I.e., is it not obvious what you
put in the text field, or is it not obvious what clicking the button
will do, or is neither of those obvious?
Former, all filter buttons are labelled "Filter", regardless if they
refer to display or capture filters.
It might be an idea, to label the more often display filter ones
simply "Filter...", and the capture filter buttons something more
descriptive like "Capture Filter...".
Isn't that obvious from the context? Or is the problem that it's not
obvious that libpcap filters and Ethereal filters are different?
I don't think the context of applying some filter string to the text
entry field next to the button is the problem.
I think, it's confusing that:
a.) you first have to understand that there are two different filter
"worlds" one for ethereal display and the other for libpcap capturing.
b.) and then get the idea at which button/entry you have to enter which
filter syntax, as the dialogs are really looking quite similar.
Hmmmm, after thinking a bit about this, it's maybe a good idea to call
the display filter just like they were called before (e.g. "Filter:"),
as they appear "often" on the screen and one could see this as the
"normal" case.
As the capture filter appears a lot less on the screen (only in the
capture dialog), it should be clearly marked as such. This should be a
different
button label "Capture Filter:" and a big remark on the capture filter
dialog, so one could see this as the "special" case.
