Another workaround is to build with gnu make.

There's already a FreeBSD PR open[1] to upgrade the Ethereal port.

The patch I added there on Sunday uses the USE_GMAKE = yes directive, so
the build succeeds without the edited Makefile.in.  Now we just need to
get patch committed to the ports tree. ;-)
