This is fine with me, as long as it's not too much of a hassle for the
other developers. I'm using the "make dist" to generate the tarball, so
"configure" needs to be present at that time anyway.
If the cleverness of automake is a problem, we can always force files
to be included in the tarball by adding them to the EXTRA_DIST section
of Makefile.am.
