Just double-checked Software Update, and there are no updates for me.  There are no crash reports from that time period either. And yet.. I just launched it as I was typing this, and it worked. Spooky.

Others with the same problem have resolved the issue by performing an OSX system update (or by installing the indicated libraries from MacPorts, which you seem to be avoiding). See the posts below:
