A router with the tomato firmware would probably be best as it gives you
many options for bandwidth utilization graphs.

You can place a switch between the Wireless Router and ADSL modem and
span the correct ports.
Then you connect your laptop to the switch with a wire to the spanned
port and then you can capture the traffic between your router and
modem.
Well once you've put a managed switch there you probably want to use
the statistics of the switch instead of wireshark to calculate
volumes.
