As it turned out, the issue was even more embarrassing than bad code. When I copied the plugin source to my 1.4.0 tree, I forgot to do a distclean before building. So it didn't actually rebuild the plugins until I started adding debug to track down the problem. (The fact that adding printfs alone seemed to "fix" the issue was my first clue... ;)
