Ah, thank you!  I have modified your patch to work correctly when
typing backspace with no popup window active.  The string in the
filter_te still have the deleted character...  Committed revision
26581.  Please check if this works for you.

I suppose this is much better now, and I think we can live with the
"not" problems.
