'make dist' is a GNU thing indeed from the pre-git era. Git archive made it
obsolete. Just look at practically all projects hosted on GitHub. The tarballs
are generated from git tags.
I'm OK with keeping autotools for a few more months, but make dist can (and IMO
should) be removed earlier.
Keeping make dist working reliably requires building all versions twice, once
from git, once from make dist's tarball. I think that would be waste of CPU
cycles for gaining practically nothing.
