Wireshark does not have destructors (if you are interested, proto_cleanup() in
epan/proto.c is called to unload protocols).

Maybe it is a question for the list, how to handle such situations.

Anyway, your approach is not wrong, optimization (guard against at most
doubling memory usage?) can be done later if needed.
