Subdir-objects requires (or at least strongly suggests) having one huge
non-recursive Makefile.am, either literally or via "include" directives. This
looks like a non-trivial conversion for us:

$ find . -name Makefile.am | wc -l
154

If this *does* require a significant amount of work I'm not sure if it would be
worth it in comparison to getting the CMake configuration ready for production.
