Mike Kershaw and Mike Ryan are also working on something similar.  They
presented their idea at Sharkfest this year (included are some compelling
reasons for such functionality):

I thought about this too but I think it would be too complex: dumpcap does
quite a bit beyond just capturing: it handles stuff like rotating the capture
files, etc.
