If I click the "Start a new live capture" button without selecting an
interface, I get a dialog reading "You didn't specify an interface on which to
capture packets."

It would be more straightforward for it to read "You didn't specify an
interface to capture packets with."

The former wording only makes sense as an intentional effort to avoid ending a
sentence with a preposition. You can Google on this topic and quickly find
credible sources dispelling that rule as a myth.

Wireshark shouldn't feel like a persnickety, mistaken English teacher. Please
use straightforward language, and don't fear ending sentences with
prepositions.
