This was discovered and discussed in fairly significant detail a while ago, but
unfortunately seems to have been forgotten since then.

The discussion consisted of quite a few messages in a thread on the
wireshark-dev mailing list, starting with this one:

The solution proposed in the thread still seems the right one to me, but it's
not immediately trivial to implement.
