Thanks for pointing me to my question :) Probaby you did it for other readers.

It's not erroring out (i understand it as protocolling errors), it's crashing.
And wireshark team successfully broke the API.

Our project has no changes for almost 2 years, now we must either rewrite it,
or - if the person who wrote it has no desire to do it - leave it so and advise
users to install outdated wireshark version. Well, it's unwise to break
compability without giving something in exchange that makes it good. As i
understand, the changes that made it to crash are made "just for fun", without
real need.

As for checking parameters, i wanted to create new bug. That's not the first
occurence of this kind - wireshark silenly crashed in the past because of
transmitting nil instead of hash array. It's very hard to find the reasons of
such errors to someone who doesn't know C well but only Lua.
