It probably is your locale setting.  You could verify this by running Wireshark
from the command line like this:

LANG=C wireshark

(I'd try this but it seems my C library doesn't like any of the locale's I've
tried.)

Bug 2880 solved a problem in tshark which was similar, but I'm not sure the fix
would be applicable to display filters.
