This is, apparently, the way things are supposed to work in modern X (or at
least GNOME) systems.
For example, if I open 2 GNOME Terminals and:
1) highlight some text in one, I can "paste" that text into the other using the
middle button. If I select Edit->Paste, I get nothing.
2) highlight some text in one and select Edit->Copy, I can NOT "paste" that
text into the other window using the middle button, but I CAN do it by
selecting Edit->Paste.
Combinations are also possible. For example, I highlighted some text in one
window, did Edit->Copy, then selected some different text. I could then
"paste" the currently-selected text with the middle button and then paste the
copied text with Edit->Paste (the reverse order also works).
So, it seems that the X selection is different from the, uh, clipboard.
Given that Wireshark is telling you that it is "copy"ing the information, I
think it's putting the information in the right place. It simply does not have
a way of selecting text (which could be "pasted" with the middle button).
