I confirmed this works correctly in 1.6.0 and 1.7.0 in Ubuntu 11.04.

The following Lua tests for the originally reported error:

function proto_foo.dissector(buf, pinfo, tree)

    -- make sure buffer is right size and does not "create nil"
    if buf:len() < 8 then return end
    assert(buf(0,8))

    -- print the 64-bit integer
    local u64 = buf(0,8):uint64()
    print("u64", u64)
end
