The fact that version X of application Y, reading file Z, on version V of a
given OS doesn't run out of memory does not, *ipso facto*, mean that it won't
run out of memory on version W of the same OS, all other things being equal;
the memory allocator in version W might, for example, use a different strategy
from the allocator in version V, with the new strategy consuming more address
space.
