I think this problem occurred when Steve tried to optimize the functionality in
r24511 and r24595.

The first change introduced a huge memory foot print.  The second fix removed
removed this, but also the values used to build the filter (which leads to what
Jaap describes in comment #3).  I think we should revert this changes (at least
for 1.0.1) until someone implements a better optimization...
