If you're using 0.99.0 then you're probably hitting this bug:

http://bugs.ethereal.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=895

That'll be fixed in the next version which will be Wireshark 0.99.1 (http://www.wireshark.org). Note that there's a pre-release available already.

I keep having problems with Ethereal. I've set it to
Use Multiple Files with Next File after 1 MB and a
Ring Buffer of 10. Ethereal makes multiple files that
are 100+ bytes, not 1 MB, large and then stops with
this error:

13:26:15 Warn capture_info_new_file: The file
"/home/capture/courts_00014_20060628132613" doesn't
exist.

(ethereal:18555): GLib-WARNING **: giounix.c:400Error
while getting flags for FD: Bad file descriptor (9)

Any help would be appreciated.

I have an IBM T42 laptop that had Ubuntu Breezy
(5.10) on it and I never had a problem running
ethereal. I upgraded it to Dapper (6.06) and keep
getting the following errors. I thought that they
may be a issue with the upgrade, so I reinstalled
Dapper from scratch and still keep getting these
errors. Ethereal will capture for a short while and
then just stop capturing packets though it looks
like it is still running. I get these errors on the
terminal that I sudo ethereal from. Any pointers to
fixing this would be appreciated. Here are the
errors:

(ethereal:6056): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid
unclassed pointer in cast to `GtkProgressBar'

(ethereal:6056): Gtk-CRITICAL **:
gtk_progress_bar_update: assertion
`GTK_IS_PROGRESS_BAR (pbar)' failed

(ethereal:6056): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid

(ethereal:6056): Gtk-CRITICAL **:
