What NIC are you using? can you update you NIC's software driver to the latest?
What is your version of your OS? also check the installed programs to verify that WInCap v3.1 is installed. You could uninstall both ethereal and wincap, reboot and then install Wincap3.1 first. Install ethereal and when it shows the screen where you can untick Wincap do this and continue with the installation.
Also go the preferences under the edit menu and select capture and select your NIC and tick the following:
Capture packets in promiscuous mode
Update list of packets in real time
automatic scrolling in live capture

Hello.
When I am trying to run Ethereal, no packets are being captured. In the capture tab it lists the Generic Dial up Adapter. I can't get the program to sniff with my NIC. I am student trying to monitor and analyze different types of traffic that are going to and from my PC. I have trouble-shooted for quite some time and have had no such luck. I have administrator privileges. When I tried to install WinCap 3.1 I got a message that it was already on my machine and it aborted. Please help me utilize this program.
