For NIC's that don't support promiscuous mode, such as many/most wireless NIC's, they can be bridged with another NIC and then the bridge connection can be sniffed using ethereal.

Subject: [Ethereal-users] newbie question about ethereal

I have windows xp sp2.  I installed WinPcap and then installed ethereal. After opening ethereal, I couldn't sniff any wireless packets, so I checked the FAQ.  Windump -D showed my wireless NIC, so I figured I was good there.  Checked again, still nothing.  Checked the FAQ again and found that I should make sure that the WinPCap service was running (after a reboot).  It was not, so I changed the registry entry to make the NPF service automatic.  I rebooted again.  The service was running, and the windump results were still good, so I went ahead and started up ethereal again.  No packets received.

Now, I'm not sure if my Intel PRO/Wireless 2200b/g card can be put into promiscuous mode.. which I think is where I'm having the problems.  Google let me down when searching for that info.  Any suggestions?
