I am supposed to write a course to train the new engineers in how to do this. Generally what I do is as follows
    1. Review the protocol I wan tto analyze. Example SIP
    2. Make note of the sequence of a good call. Example I f I am booting a SIP phone what should I see.
   3. I make a test secenario.
         I work in telephony .
                            phone boot
1.I take a phone out of the box.
                    2. connect a hub betwen phone and etherent connection.
                    3, Start ethereal
                    4. Look at a good boot.

                            conversation
                    1. phone is already up
                    2. Initiate call
                    3. take for maybe 2 minutes
                    4. analyze dunp
  4. In each test scenario I take screen shots and paste in powerpoint.  Student see's
            a. step one phone boot should see this
            b. server responds with this  -etc,etc
Now for voice mail . I would set up a scenario. assuming you are checking messages on voice mail.
            1. login to voice mail
            2. What do I see on trace?
2nd shot - how does voicemail repond?
I do this on a daily basis.  I have used a $30,000 analyzer and it didn't tell me all I wanted . I used ethereal and it did. Problem with ethereal is
you can't look at in real time.

Subject: [Ethereal-users] help needed in interpreting TCP and SIP packets

Dear Sir,
I am Rajesh,I am doing my project in designing "Automation Tool for Vocie messaging". actually,

I want to know how we can interpret the packets in SIP and TCP so that I can get to know which files are being transfered from from server to SIP.

If any know about this please help me in clearing my doubts.

if any online material available for the SIP and TCP interpretation of packets by using Ethereal then make inform me about those material.

Thankyou for each and every who made this site available for every one and for their contributions in Ethereal which is helpful to lot of people like me.

once again thanking you all.

I hope your reply would be clearing my all doubts about interpretaion of TCP and SIP.

with Regards,
Rajesh
