Hi,

First of all you do not have to configure your PC to any IP at all when using ETHEREAL.The moment ETHEREAL is activated the PC's NIC is in promiscuous mode.
The answer to your basic question, how you can find the IP address of a network node is more complicated.
The following options exist:

1- The network nodes in question are computers/PCs.
You can connect one of the PC's together with your PC with ethereal
to a HUB(not switch) and restart the PC. If the PC is configured to
have a router you will see ARP packets from this PC asking for the
    router's MAC address.
If no default gateway/router is configured than cross your finger and
expect that the PC sends out something so that you can see the IP
address. You can send a broadcast packet from your PC if the
computer is UNIX/LINUX than you might get an answer to that ping.

2- The network node is a router/switch.
You can connect one of the PC's together with your PC with ethereal
to a HUB(not switch) and restart  the node. If the port of the switch
you are connected is a backbone port in live network you will see
many IPs. To find out your machine you need to know its MAC
address. If you do not know the MAC address but know if it is a
Cisco, Nortel Avaya etc you can still an educated guess. The first
three HEX(out of 6) numbers relate to the company. You can find a
     full list from IANA.

3- Someone in the organization knows the address. Ask hime!!

Hi,

I have a simple quetsion. I have two network nodes
that communicate on IP. If I want to find out what IP
configuration these nodes have can I connect my PC to
one of these nodes and run Ethereal and let it find
out what IP address the other node has? Do I have to
configure my PC to a certain IP address and Subnet
mask?

Hope someone can help.

Regards
Arjan
