Oh, one thing I wondered about maybe a week ago: why we don't just do the
following (Solaris only)

Check whether sed is GNU sed - if so, done
Check whether /usr/xpg4/bin/sed exists -if so Set SED=/usr/xpg4/bin/sed, done
Error out
