I am having a problem when trying to get Ethereal to run even when trying to
launch the program directly. It appears to be associated with the
ciscosm.dll and the acn.dll files that are located in the pluggin directory.
Environment.
I just did a clean install of Windows XP with SP2 slipstreamed into it.
Have all the latest critical updates. I am in the process of loading all
my programs back in. I downloaded and installed the runtime versions of
Pcap 3.0 and Ethereal 0.10.6.
After I installed Ethereal, I did a quick capture just to make sure
every thing was working. I did not get any problems. It started up and ran
fine. I installed a few programs, Adobe Acrobat 6, Disk Keeper Pro and Ping
Plotter. All programs installed fine. Went back to ethereal and tried to
launch it. It would start, get to the initial splash screen and then crash.
Tried removing and reinstalling ethereal and pcap several times, including
fresh download. Cleaned out all references to ethereal in the registry and
deleted the files in all my temp folders just to make sure a corrupted file
was not being installed. No luck. Installed Analyzer to check if pcap was
installed and working. It worked fine.
While reading the ethereal site for any clues, I download a capture file,
the
telnet one. Just for grins I tried to open it. It opened ethereal and
displayed the capture file. I tried a new capture, it worked fine. Saved
the capture file and exited the program. Tried to launch Ethereal directly
it fails every time. Will work every time when I opened a capture file and
let Windows run the associated ethereal program.
After a lot of trial work I narrowed the problem down to the ciscosm.dll and
the acn.dll files that are located in the pluggin directory. If either of
those files are there, ethereal will not launch. Rename the files and they
work fine.
The md5 code for each is:
acn.dll= 06d2c17b9ce11b098bc062248745a3dc
Ciscosm.dll= 51eeca644ae135199a891e5fe1a6a4d7
Does any one have any ideals on how to fix this?
Thanks
Steve
