I believe I have 'fixed' the problem by going back to libtool-1.4
I also had to remove glib-1.2.10 and gtk+-1.2.10 and install 2.2.3/2.2.4 versions. I was compiling from the source distribution.

Trying to compile Ethereal 0.10.5 - as in the source distribution - or
trying to compile a CVS or SVN snapshot?

If you're just trying to compile a source distribution, don't bother with
autogen.sh - just throw away the tree you have, re-extract the source
tarball, and start with running the configure script.
