I would guess that ethereal does not get it from the IP stack at all (ethereal will decode many more protocols than just IP). It gets the packets through the libpcap (or winpcap for windows machines) driver which does not care what layer 3 protocol is used. There is probably something about the packet that causes your IP stack to discard it before forwarding it onto your prog. There are raw pcap APIs around if you want your prog to receive all packets.

I am developing an application that relies on the IP stack for its implementation. I've been using ethereal to help debug the application. I've found that the data gets to the ethereal program, but not all the data gets to the application. Does anyone know where on the IP Stack the ethereal application gets its data from?
