no if you have a router does not affect ethereal or any other tool.

ethereal and most other tools are capable of capturing all traffic seen by
the NIC on the
host you run ethereal on.

if your NIC can see the traffic, ethereal can capture it.
if your NIC can not, then no other tool can cature it either
