Hi,
I am Harsh Patel. I am using the Ethereal software for testing in the
SIP(Session Initiation Protocol) test lab at SIEMENS. I am using the
software to trace the data transfer between the SIP phones and Software
Client of the SIP phone.(Software version of the SIP phone). The Software
Client is installed on the two workstations(windows2000)(SIP_UA1 and
SIP_UA2). All the phones and software client are connected in the same
network(LAN) behind the firewall of the lab. All the phones and servers are
in the same subnet. All the phones are connected on same hub(not a switch).I
think this piece of information will give you a slight picture as to what I
am talking about.
Now, my question is, I observed a rather unusual behavior of the Ethereal
software. When I was trying to capture the SIP packets(Enabled all in the
protocol) while trying to make a call between 2 SIP phones, it didn't gave
any SIP messages. All I found was the STP(Spanning Tree Protocol), but I was
able to get SIP packets when I was using the Software Client which was
installed on the same machine on which the Ethereal software is installed
(SIP_UA1 and SIP_UA2), and working from a SIP phone. I tried different
combinations and what I found was, the Ethereal Software was able to trace
the SIP packets only when the machine on which it was installed was involved
in the activity.(in my case it was SIP_UA1 and SIP_UA2), so if I try to
capture SIP packets without the involvement of the SIP_UA1 or SIP_UA2 then
ethereal software was unable to trace the SIP packets.
If you need any other information, please feel free to send me an email.
Waiting for an expert comment and solution to this problem.
Thank you,
Best Regards,
Harsh Patel
