In Ethereal features, it's written that:

    Does tcpdump support all these topologies and protocols as well? If not then which ones are missing and which are added?
     
     
    I'd like also to understnd the relationship between tcpdump and Ethereal.

    I have just started to use Distinct network monitor and MergeDPM to capture and decode Dicom TCIP communications.
    The problem is the distinct Network Monitor (http://www.distinct.com/) captures the packets but has a very simple analysis options.
     
    I would like to capture packets using Ethereal  and then save the capture file in a format suitable for MergeDPM (http://www.merge.com/products/oem/dpm/)
     
    Can Ethereal read capture files created by Distinct Network Monitor ?
    Can Ethereal save capture files in formats suitable for Merge to input.
    Merge seems to be able to support netxray format.
