...which means it's probably not a name resolution problem - if it were
blocked trying to resolve a name, the "Stop" button wouldn't respond
until it finished trying to resolve the name.

That's because it takes Ethereal a long time to read a very large
capture file.

...and that's because we allow you to cancel the process of reading a
capture file, in case you don't want to wait for Ethereal to load a
large capture file.
