To which tar.gz file are you referring?

The "ethereal-0.8.16.tar.gz" file from

	http://www.ethereal.com/distribution/

doesn't contain an Ethereal binary, so if that's the tar.gz file you
unzipped, you will have to run the "configure" script from that tarball,
and run "make" to compile Ethereal, first.

Ethereal 0.8.16 is part of the FreeBSD ports collection for
4.2-STABLE/i386, at least, and other versions may be available for
different releases, so you could either install it as a port or as a
package.
