If the same thing happens when you run snoop or tcpdump, it means that,
for whatever reason, setting up the device for packet capture causes the
driver, or the interface, to stop reporting errors.

If it *does* happen if you disable promiscuous mode (which all of them
can disable), then it means that, for whatever reason, running the
device in promiscuous mode causes the driver, or the interface, to stop
reporting errors.
